Minkhorst and Kolar Win Flagstick.com Players Tour PGA of Ottawa Spring Open

Carleton Golf & Yacht Club in the south end of Ottawa hosted the Flagstick.com Players Tour – PGA of Ottawa Spring Open on Monday, June 6.

Area golf professionals gathered to play some competitive golf after a long off season and the Spring Open is the first stroke play event on their competitive summer schedule.

Bill Minkhorst from the Prescott Golf Club was in the first group off the tee and with his stellar round of 4 under par 67 made him the leader waiting in the clubhouse all afternoon to see if his score would hold up. It did and he was declared Spring Open Champion after his fellow competitors posted their scores.

When asked what he was thinking throughout the afternoon, PGA of Ottawa Spring Champion Bill Minkhorst responded. “I wasn’t really sure that my score would hold up with the winds blowing the way they were. The conditions were tough and I was kind of hoping. We had nobody in front of us and we played in three and a half hours. It was a tremendous pace for us as the lead group. I hit my hybrid straight on most of the holes, hit the greens and putted well today.”

With 5 birdies on the front and a score of 30, Bill set the pace for the field. He had a double and a single bogey on the back side along with 2 birdies on his way to his winning score. He’s also looking forward to the remainder of the events on the Flagstick.com Players Tour this summer.

John Kelly and Lee Curry from Hylands and PGA of Canada Member Luke Saunders were close with their scores of 3 under par 68 and they tied for 2nd place.

In the senior division of the competition Terry Kolar from Mississippi posted a score of 74 and finished one stroke ahead of Dave Kalil from the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club.

PGA of Ottawa co-captains thanked the members and staff of the Carleton Golf & Yacht Club for the use of their club and the course conditioning for their Spring Open.

PGA of Ottawa players also wished a speedy recovery to Harry Hereford, their Executive Director after a recent emergency operation.

Next up for PGA of Ottawa Golf Professionals on the Flagstick.com Players Tour is their Pro-Pro event at Whitetail Golf Club on June 27th.

August 1st - TaylorMade/Adidas Summer Open

On Monday, July 27th under sweltering conditions at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club, Luke Saunders of the OAC Golf School was crowned the Taylor Made-adidas Golf Summer Open Champion. Luke’s round of two under par 69, which included one eagle and four birdies against four bogeys, bested the field of fellow professionals by four shots. Remarkably, this is Luke’s first victory at an Ottawa PGA event after a number second place finishes.

“I hit the ball extremely well today and made my fair share of putts. Even my chipping, whish is normally a weakness, was very strong. It just seemed like everything was clicking out there today and my round had the potential to be even better” said Luke after the round.

Rounding out the top five all with 2 over rounds of 73 were Bob Flaro of the Rivermead Golf Club, Jason Winters of the Kevin Haime Golf School, Jonathan Schaepper of Mountain Creek Golf Club and Chris Barber of The Landings Golf Centre.

In the Senior Division Steve Hall of Calabogie came out victorious over Terry Kolar of Mississippi Golf Club on the 4th extra hole.

Special thanks to our title sponsor Taylor Made-adidas Golf, represented by Sam Moss and Michel Normand. Also a big thank you to Royal Ottawa Head Professional Paul Carrothers for hosting this Flagstick.com Players Tour event.

July 1st - Pro/Pro

The Flagstick.com Players’ Tour 2015 Pro-Pro Championship, presented by Boutique Pro Golf Buying Group took place on Monday, June 29th at Club de Golf Le Sorcier.

Under warm and sunny skies, 27 teams were battling for the Championship. Playing three different formats, better ball the first six holes, Chapman alternate shot the middle six holes, and scramble the final six holes, the team of Chris Learmoth of Deep River Golf Club and Jason McGrath of Glen-Mar Golf Club were crowned the Champions. Posting a score of 6-under 65 they found themselves in a playoff with Dan McNeely and Paul Vaillancourt of Smiths Falls.

McGrath kick started the round with an eagle three on the par-five third hole, which helped the team make it through the better ball format at three under. After playing the alternate shot portion in even par that set the stage to make a run in the scramble format. Playing those last six holes in three under landed them in the playoff. While they thought a score of 63 or 64 was out there, the combination of difficult greens and blustery conditions kept the scores from going lower than anticipated.

There were five other teams tied for third at 5 under par just one shot back. The teams of Scott McLeod/Derek MacDonald, Joe Diflorio/ Jon Stevenson, JC Beecroft/ Marc Rouse, Marc Foucault/Dany Lacombe and lastly Dave Kalil/Mike Dagenais.

Special thanks to Host Professional Guy Bealieu and his team at Club de Golf Le Sorcier for a great day.
